As the night falls, homes are beautifully adorned with earthen lamps called diyas and vibrant, colorful lights that illuminate the surroundings. Many families also create intricate Rangoli designs at their doorsteps, using colored powders, rice, or flower petals to add an artistic touch to their homes.
The significance of Diwali is deeply rooted in mythology. It commemorates the return of Lord Ram, along with Mata Sita and his brother Lakshman, to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and the victory over the demon king Ravana. To celebrate their return, people light diyas to guide them home and express their joy.
Additionally, Diwali is associated with other historical events, such as the Bandi Shodh diwas . A popular Punjabi saying encapsulates the spirit of this day: “Dal Roti ghar Di Diwali Ambasar di,” emphasizing the importance of this festival in Amritsar.
